Sheriff vs Real Madrid Preview

The conquerors of the Santiago Bernabéu, Sheriff Tiraspol, must try and replicate what was arguably the biggest result in European club football, as Real Madrid travel to Moldova with revenge firmly on their mind after an embarrassing 2-1 loss in the reverse fixture. That famous win put Sheriff top of UEFA Champions League (UCL) Group D but two defeats since has seen them slip to third, and only another shock victory here can put UCL progression back into their own hands.
However, if second-placed Inter don’t lose to fourth-placed Shakhtar in Group D’s other game, Sheriff will at least secure Europa League football in the spring. Domestically, Sheriff have won nine games in a row, and their goalscoring has been evident in the UCL too after scoring in all four group fixtures - twice after the 85th minute - an impressive feat for a side that prior to matchday one had zero players with UCL group stage experience.
Claiming revenge will see Real secure UCL progression, and go some way to relieving the lingering embarrassment boss Carlo Ancelotti will feel after that Bernabéu loss. This looks a much different side to that reverse fixture though, with Ancelotti guiding Real to six wins from their last seven games (D1) - a run that’s helped take them to the top of La Liga.
The 13-time European champions will now travel to Tiraspol after winning their first two group away matches ‘to nil’, albeit neither saw any Real player score before half-time. However, at least one Real goal before the 25th minute in their four competitive games running up to this clash (W4) shows that trend could be about to end.
Players to watch: Sheriff’s Sébastien Thill scored the late winner at the Bernabéu, and netted a second-half goal vs Inter. Vinícius Júnior scored a second-half brace in Real’s last UCL road trip - nine of his ten 2021/22 club goals came after half-time.
Hot stat: Sheriff have conceded an average of 12 corners per UCL group stage match.
