Sporting CP vs Borussia Dortmund Preview

It’s all to play for in UEFA Champions League (UCL) Group C as Portuguese outfit Sporting Lisbon welcome German giants Borussia Dortmund to the nation’s capital. With both sides starting UCL matchday five on six points a piece, this clash could prove make-or-break for the two famous outfits!
Since losing the reverse H2H 1-0 in Germany, Sporting have won nine straight matches across all competitions, including twice beating Beşiktaş in the UCL 4-1 and 4-0, which will see them enter here full of confidence as they aim for a win by two goals or more to guarantee progression. What will be a cause for concern, however, is the fact that the hosts have lost their previous three H2Hs with Dortmund whilst the 1963/64 European Cup Winners’ Cup victors have also won just two of their last eight home matches versus German opposition (D2, L4).
Dortmund will again be without the influential Erling Haaland and a raft of other injured stars for this vital trip to Portugal as they look to qualify for the UCL knockout rounds for a fourth-straight campaign. The visitors will know that a win here, due to their previous H2H victory over Sporting, will see them achieve that feat.
Whilst the away side hold a strong overall record versus Portuguese opposition (W9, L4), they’ll remain wary as all four of those prior losses came away from home. That said, Dortmund’s only previous visit to Estádio José Alvalade saw them leave with a 2-1 victory en route to a quarter-finals finish in 2016/17.
Players to watch: Sporting’s Paulinho has enjoyed a successful UCL campaign so far this season, netting three goals in four appearances - two of those strikes coming between the 30th minute and half-time. Marco Reus netted the winner for Dortmund last time out in the Bundesliga and has now scored in four straight competitive matches for club and country.
Hot stat: Sporting have scored in their last 30 home matches across all competitions.
